Rostrum animation is a technique of creating a "living image" from a still photograph or illustration.  An surprising amount of information can be gained by digitally capturing old photographs particularly if using original glass plate negatives.  Photographic techniques of the past often provide photographs of incredible detail and quality.     The animation of these photographs by both panning and zooming enables the detail to be unlocked and hidden stories told. A voice over and sound effects can be added to provide additional information and atmosphere.

The animations can be displayed using computers or DVD players thus saving a considerable amount of exhibition space compared with wall mounting individual images.
